Chapter 16

The drive to wherever Gina was taking them was made in silence. The weather was getting worse.

It couldn’t have been more apropos, since, on this night, the innocence of a little girl had been lost. The people she trusted the most had betrayed her and she didn’t know who she could count on. All she knew was that her mother had been alive all this time. This felt like a nightmare that she couldn’t wake up from. Cicely had so many questions. Why didn’t her mother try to reach out to her? The obvious answer was because she didn’t want to. She didn’t want her. Is that why they lied to her all this time?

Braylee was wrapped up in her own thoughts as well. The energy between Alex and Gina was undeniable. It wasn’t something she’d imagined. While Gina may have chosen Luciano, it was quite clear that there were some unresolved feelings between her and Alex.

It had only been a few hours, but it seemed like a lifetime ago that he’d looked into her eyes and told her that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. At the time, she believed him. Maybe he meant it…then. However, Braylee never got a chance to respond. It was probably best given that she had no idea how any of this was going to play out. She hated Gina, but she also believed her confession of not having anything to do with Luciano’s and Nate’s death. As much as she wanted to think Gina was up to no good the way she looked at Cecily led her to believe she was telling the truth. Something else was going on.

The car lurched dragging her out of her thoughts. Then it zig-zagged as if the driver was losing control. She held her breath as it somehow managed to come to a complete stop. While it was dark outside and the wind and rain pelted the car, Braylee knew they were driving upward. This part of China was mountainous and in this weather, extremely dangerous. The car stopped for a moment, then slowly started to move again.

She pinched the bridge of her nose and closed her eyes. It was at this moment, that she realized she’d fallen in love, not just with Alex, but his entire family. Braylee loved Cecily like she was her own daughter and wanted to protect her from all of this madness that she had nothing to do with. Unfortunately, she was just a bi-product of some really bad choices her parents made. She could most definitely relate to that. When she opened her eyes, Alex was staring into hers. She could see the storm of confusion in him. They didn’t speak they just smiled weakly at each other. This night was a perfect storm of too many secrets: secrets that had been hidden for way too long and were about to be revealed in a dramatic fashion.

After almost an hour of riding in silence, they seemed to have made it to their destination.
